Subject specific directories have been quiet popular as the user can get a lot of websites with similar themes or objectives under the same roof.

On the other hand even generic web directories come up with several categories and sub categories to fasten the search process for the users.

We can bring an analogy with the modern shopping malls, which basically attempt to catter to all your needs under the same roof. They seggrgate products by categories and store them in several departments inside the mall. Even smaller shopping malls address the seggregation in a similar fashion by using racks or compartments.

On the other hand traditional shopping concept supports subject specific stores or shops, where the buyer can find a product of one category or products of similar categories only.

Which one is better? It is the buyer to decide.

Search Engine Ranking

February 7th, 2008

People often repents that his so nice website never comes in the search engines in first 20 or 30 listings. The question comes, when search engines have got any biased role for some websites/ companies?

Internet savvy people knows that every search engine has got its own algorithm and set of parameters for ranking of websites. The most interesting part is that any search engine reveals their algorithm and on top of it, they change the algorithm very frequently.

So, the website, which may be visible among the top 10 listings today, may loose its position even tomorrow!

There are certain basic criteria which most of the search engines follow like the incoming visitors and the inbound links. In the recent past it has been observed that most of the search engines have started emphasizing on content.

One more issue, no search engine like camouflaging, they have become smart enough to catch you!

When New Sites get crawled?

January 23rd, 2008

This is a common perception that websites are crawled by the search engines, only when the user submits them in the respective search engines. But this is one of the most incorrect notion, people possess.

If anybody thinks a bit logically, he can realize the truth. Just ask yourself, why do you use search engines? The most common answer is to find out the latest information. Information may be in terms of some knowledge, or even you may be want to be aware of the updates in your desired segment.

Most of the people search for products and services and that’s why Internet finds the shopping boom. However, if you search a particular product and the search engine fails to give you the vivid information, then the search engine becomes useless to you. As an example, of google fails to display the result of Tata Steel, when you search by Steel Industry, then will you visit google next time?

The fact of life is that every search engine tries to keep the latest information of all the existing websites and also the emerging sites. The crawlers notice the changes in every page also.

So, this is true that you need search engines to perform your search activity - on top of it, this is also true that the search engine requires visitors, and that’s why they also remain up-to-date.

January 13th, 2008

One wants to find out the websites, which match hundred percent his needs or desire, and that is the basic purpose of searching. Now the question is whether to use phrases or keywords.

Modern Search Engines allow both types of search - you can simply type your phrase and the search engine will display data accordingly. They try to match as close as possible. If a phrase is big, the search engine tries to go by the meaning or basic objective of the phrase. Remember search engine crawls the complete page and while crawling the complete page, it also records the sentences, used in meta or even the statements, furnished in the corresponding pages.

Keyword search is the most used techniques even today, where the user has to just key in the keywords to get the desired result. The keywords can be combined using spaces. Quodes are used for more specific searches. Plus and minus symbols are used to priorotiz or de-priorotize the keywords. Alternate keywords are also to be used for a better set of search result.
